Paddle surf, the popular aquatic sport

Fun, easy to learn and very complete on a muscle level. Let us tell you why this sport is the summer sensation

Paddle surf is gaining fans every day on beaches all around the world. Unlike other aquatic sports, the basics of paddle surf are easy to learn, making it an entertaining and accessible sport for anyone, regardless of age. Also, it can be practiced as a group or alone, making it perfect for enjoying this summer. But if there is a main reason why paddle surf is becoming so popular, it’s because of its health benefits.

What benefits are they?

Although it doesn’t seem to require any effort, paddle surf exercises practically the entire body. Why? When you’re rowing, the upper part of the body, specifically the shoulders, pectoral muscles and arms are exercising. It also requires an effort to keep your balance, working on the lower part of the body (quadriceps, calf muscles and glutes) and the core (abdominals and lumbar).

Another positive effect of paddle surf is the cardiovascular activity. Rowing keeps our heart in shape and reduces our blood pressure.

Finally, this activity always takes place in contact with nature, which can reduce the feeling of fatigue, improve blood pressure and have a positive impact on our mood.

Correct technique

Before starting to row, it’s very important to spend time learning the technique. This will allow us to learn the basics of rowing, the position of the board and the position of the body, and will greatly improve the experience from the start. Below are some basic tips:

  • First, stand on the centre of the board, with your feet apart and your knees slightly bent. Look straight ahead, this will improve your balance
  • To move along the water, take the oar with both hands, one hand at the handle and the other half way down.
  • For the stroke, bring the oar as forward as you can and, from there, row back until you reach the level of your feet. The further forward you send the oar at the beginning of the movement, the stronger it will be and the further you will move. Rowing backwards will bring you to a stop. Try to row on one side, and when you need to turn, change the position of your hands on the oar and row on the other side.

In theory, paddle surf is a sport that is practiced on calm waters, without strong currents or waves. As with any other sea sport, it is very important to check the weather conditions before you start. If you have any doubts, ask a professional (paddle surf teachers, lifeguards, etc.) before entering the water.

Paddle surf is a refreshing and healthy activity to consider if you are going to the beach. Why not try it?

Get a board, an oar… and enjoy!
