5 habits for a healthy brain


Learning new skills, staying physically active and eating a balanced diet all help to promote brain health.

Alzheimer’s, the leading cause of dementia, is a disease that impacts over 1.2 million people in Spain, as reported by the Confederación Española de Alzheimer (Spanish Alzheimer’s Confederation).

Age plays a crucial role in cognitive function. The brain begins to shrink around the age of 30, leading to a decline in episodic memory. This means we may find it harder to recall specific moments, places and experiences with clarity.

Stress also plays a role in memory loss. Forgetting where you’ve put your keys is normal. However, if you find yourself momentarily unsure of the purpose of your keys, this could be indicative of Alzheimer’s or dementia.

5 habits for a healthy brain

While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s or dementia, adopting certain habits can help maintain good brain health.

Learn new skills. Whether it’s learning a new language, taking a cooking class or trying a new sport, what matters is having interests and developing them. Reading and pursuing hobbies also foster memory and creativity, contributing to long-term cognitive health.

Get moderate exercise. Regular physical activity enhances cognitive function and brain plasticity. This includes simple routines like brisk walks and going to the gym. Housework, DIY projects and dancing also help up the time spent on daily exercise.

Eat a Mediterranean diet. Boost your intake of fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains while reducing salt, sugar and animal fats.

Monitor blood pressure. Regularly check your blood pressure, particularly if you are prone to hypertension. A balanced diet also aids in managing high blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes 

Have an active social life. Maintaining an active social life is essential for keeping your brain young. Regular interactions with family and friends, as well as participation in clubs or associations, help foster new relationships and keep the mind engaged.

Clearly, incorporating certain habits can go a long way in supporting brain health. Put them into practice to preserve your memory and creativity.
