How to maintain healthy lungs, according to pulmonologists

Keep your breathing system in shape and you’ll be less vulnerable to infections.

Reinforcing our breathing system is vital for preventing or reducing infections in our airways. With simple habits, we can strengthen our lungs so they can protect us.

  1. Ventilate your home. Renew the air in your home regularly (10-15 minutes a day is enough) to avoid the concentration of toxins. Breathing clean air boosts our lung health.
  2. Inhale correctly. Superficial breathing makes us more sensitive to stress. Pay attention to the pace, depth and intensity of the movement.
  3. Minimum contamination. The quality of exterior air can vary day by day. Try to limit the amount of time you spend outdoors in areas with a lot of contamination.
  4. Lower risk of infection. Wash your hands frequently and avoid busy places. This is useful for all infections. If you catch a cold, stay away from people.
  5. Avoid congestants. Some foods favour phlegm. Such as dairy, processed meats, caffeine, canned fish and alcohol.
  6. Practice aerobic exercise. This helps to keep the breathing system in top condition. You’ll breath faster and more deeply, and your heart will increase the blood flow to the lungs.
