Commit today to quitting

Get ready to take the decision and enjoy a new healthy lifestyle.

If you are still smoking, you are probably waiting for a little nudge to quit.

On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day (31 May), the World Health Organisation encourages smokers to be brave, take the plunge and opt for a healthier lifestyle.

Here is a simple four-step plan to break up with tobacco:

  1. Set a date. Choose a day next week. This will give you enough time to prepare and will also keep you focused and motivated to achieve your goal.
  2. Tell your friends, family and colleagues. Explain your decision and how they can help you. They will encourage you not to give in to temptation, when your strength is failing you.
  3. Anticipate challenges. Visualise your triggers and what may cause you to give in. Look for alternative activities (sport, cooking, calling a friend, etc.).
  4. Eliminate tobacco from your surroundings. Remove anything related to cigarettes (packs, lighters, ashtrays, etc.) from your sight, thus minimising exposure to these symbols and making it easier.

Need help? Talk to ex-smokers: learning about their success stories can inspire and motivate you. In addition, this month’s challenge (Get ready to break up with tobacco) can serve as a guide.
