Prevent dry eye syndrome

Wearing a face mask can mean your eyes become red and itchy, but we have the solution.

Face masks are an essential measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19. However, prolonged use can cause itching, stinging, red eyes, blurry vision and light sensitivity. This is what’s known as dry eye syndrome.

Ways to prevent dry eye syndrome

  1. Made-to-measure masks. Look for face masks with a nose wire and adjustable loops so you can adjust the mask to fit your face correctly. You can also place a folded tissue in the upper part of the mask to stop the air escaping.
  2. Eye drops. Use oil-based eye drops several times a day stop your eyes from drying out. Unfortunately, you can’t use them with contact lenses..
  3. Include omega-3. Add foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids to your diet. You’ll find omega-three fatty acids in oily fish such as salmon, sardines, tuna, trout and anchovies, as well as in flaxseed.
  4. Natural moisturiser. Before bed, use a warm damp cloth on your eyes for a few minutes. This stimulates the Meibomian glands, which provide the oily layer of our tears.
  5. Avoid hot air. Avoid very warm rooms, try not to use a hair dryer and, when out and about, wear wraparound sunglasses to protect your eyes from the wind.
  6. A humidifier at home. Humidifiers moisten the air, lubricate the respiratory system and create a healthier environment for our eyes.
  7. Night eye gel. For severe cases you can apply ointment with paraffin, lecithin or lanolin before bed. This should be used at night as the thick ointment makes it difficult to see properly.
